The strange hypnotic beauty of hitting a rainbow jelly with a tennis racket

If you had an incredibly powerful slow motion camera, what would you film with it?
The first thing that occurred to you probably wouldn’t be a rainbow jelly being diced into hundreds of pieces by a tennis racket.
But this video, filmed at up to 12,000 frames per second, proves that such colourful destruction is exactly what you should be filming.
The video was made by Gav and Dan, aka the Slow Mo Guys, whose YouTube channel, as their name suggests, consists of them filming various unlikely things in super slow motion.
And while it may seem like a frivolous or simple thing to achieve, Gavin Free, one of the guys in question, explained the perfect shot was hard to nail.
He told the Press Association: “It was challenging to get the ‘hero’ shot because it has to be so close up.
“So many things have to align correctly in terms of landing in the centre of frame, being in focus and Dan hitting it cleanly.
“We also had a time limit, with the sun only being in the perfect place for backlighting for a very small window. We got our best shot on our final jello.”
In the end, they got it absolutely spot on – but that’s perhaps not surprising given they have considerable experience in this area.
Other slow motion videos on their channel include an electric face puncher, rainbow paint on a speaker and firing a 2in gun.
