The prestigious accolade comes as the 90-year-old jazz and pop idol gives his 10th performance at the city centre venue on July 3.

This is the first time the Symphony Hall has ever recognised an artist in this way.

Since his first visit to the hall in 1996, Tony has performed to more than 17,000 fans.

His greatest hits include The Best Is Yet to Come, How Do You Keep the Music Playing, I Got Rhythm, The Shadow of Your Smile and multi-award winning fan favourite I Left My Heart in San Francisco.

Speaking about the venue, Tony said: "I have loved performing for audiences over the years at Birmingham Symphony Hall as it is a beautiful theatre.

"I am honoured to have seat in the hall named after me to mark my 10th performance here and I look forward to coming back for many more performances to come."

Chris Proctor, programme manager at the venue, said: "We are delighted to welcome Tony Bennett back to Symphony Hall for what will be his 10th performance here - and we knew we had to celebrate this landmark occasion in a special way.

"Honouring Tony with a plaque in our hall is the perfect way to show our appreciation for his loyalty and support of our venue over the years."

Tickets for the special night are still available.
