Original Del Amitri line-up for hits tour in Birmingham
Scottish five-piece Del Amitri will return to Birmingham on Monday to headline the city’s Symphony Hall. It’s part of a tour that will end with two shows at Glasgow Barrowlands – a venue they’ll be playing for the first time since 2002.
Singer Justin Currie is looking forward to the whole tour and says it’ll be a thrill to return to the Barrowlands after their Birmingham date.
“In 1990, after eight years of slogging to build a Glasgow following, Del Amitri played Barrowlands for the first time.
“It was as if everybody had turned up all at once. We’d never heard noise like it, never seen every hand raised and clapping on the snare beat, never been so overwhelmed by a crowd. It was the confirmation of our arrival in our own hometown. We did Barrowlands on every UK tour from then on. We did multiple nights, had Santa descend from the roof, covered Thin Lizzy and finally the Sex Pistols in the dark as we bowed out in 2002. We’re overjoyed to be able to announce our return to the greatest rock venue in the world.”
The tour will feature original band members – Justin Currie, Iain Harvie, Andy Alston, Kris Dollimore and Ashley Soan.
Formed in Glasgow in 1983, during their distinguished career Del Amitri released four top 10 albums and a string of memorable hit singles. Their million-selling breakthrough album Waking Hours (1989) included the hits Nothing Ever Happens and Kiss This Thing Goodbye. The follow-up, 1992’s Change Everything, featured the massive radio single Always The Last To Know and reached number two in the UK album chart.
“From Nothing Ever Happens to Jesus Saves, there is a catalogue of Del Amitri songs that seem even more relevant now than when we wrote them,” adds Iain Harvie.
