Tiny art is just Jane’s cup of tea
Artist Jane Fairweather has found the perfect frame for her miniature works of art – the humble teacup.
Jane, from south Shropshire, creates fascinating ‘bonsai’ trees, and gardens, that fit beautifully inside the teacups, make from machine and hand embroidery.
Her work is currently on display at the Oswestry visitor and exhibition centre, in the grounds of St Oswald’s Church.
The textile artist said: “Each piece of work is a labour of love – taking many hours – and is unique. I use my knowledge of art to embroider realistic pieces of textiles including varieties of trees, shrubs, flowers or countryside. Inspiration comes from my love of my garden and the countryside in which I live – clear skies, newly opened spring leaves on trees and later, autumnal colours. My favourite flowers – roses, clematis, foxgloves, bluebells and wild flowers – all created in stitches and textiles.
"My original tea-set was used as the centrepiece of an exhibition by four branches of the Embroiderers’ Guild to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Capability Brown at the National Trust’s Berrington Hall, Herefordshire, in 2016.
“The tea-set was featured on the poster and all the leaflets given to visitors to Berrington Hall; on the NT website and NT press website.”
As well as her tea-sets, Jane also creates wall hangings, miniature landscapes on a tiny easel, brooches and other pieces of embroidery including needle felted and embroidered pebbles which are sold in local galleries.
“I teach my 3D teacup oak tree workshops to Embroiderers’ Guilds and other textile groups,” she said.
