Outdoor seating and a market square atmosphere is being planned for Oswestry market to help people enjoy a return to shopping and meeting up with friends while complying with Covid restrictions.

The town council says that the full reopening of the market is scheduled for April 14.

Currently only stalls selling essential goods can trade. However the popular upstairs cafe will be unable to offer indoor seating.

Markets and events manager, David Clough, said the council has recently invested in new seating and tables for outside.

“We would love customers to sit and enjoy the ambiance of the market square whilst having a coffee or a bite to eat and meeting up with their friends or family again,” he said.

Mr Clough said the past year had been a frustrating and worrying time for every market trader.

“They are all looking forward to the scheduled reopening of the markets and can’t wait to see all their customers once again," he added.

“Oswestry markets have been around for over 800 years and seen many challenges, but non more difficult than the Covid pandemic.

"As long as there are no changes to the Prime Minister’s roadmap all our traders will once again be able to open and are very much looking forward to trading and meeting new and old friends.”

He said Covid restrictions such as social distancing would still be in place to ensure public safety.
