Carol Vorderman is still hoping to fly solo around the world – in two or three years.

The presenter and former Countdown host, 56, postponed the flight to spend time with her mother who was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

She said she still wants to do the trip, but in the meantime has embarked on another hobby which keeps her closer to the ground – cycling.

She said: “I’m just starting to re-engage. I’m taking things gently, looking after the kids and my family. That’s really the focus at the moment.”

Vorderman said that the flight could take place in “two or three years” adding: “I’ll probably start  (flying) again in July.”

She said of her new hobby: “I cycle around Bristol all the time. I’m cycling five or six days a week.

The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant will be back saluting “unsung heroes” when she hosts the Pride Of Britain Awards.

She said the ceremony made her emotional “but I try to get rid of all my tears beforehand”.

“I know the backstories of the families before the event but my job is making sure that all of the winners manage to say all the things that they want to say and have a great time,” she said.

Nominations are now open for the awards, broadcast on ITV.

“They may be people who have consistently helped others on a small level. But they’re the people that give you hope, that make you feel good about the world,” she said.

“Those are the people we want you to nominate because if you don’t nominate them, then nobody else is going to.”

Coming after the terror attacks in London and Manchester as well as the Grenfell Tower fire, Vorderman said the ceremony would  also “reflect” the year.

:: People can nominate by visiting prideofbritain.com/nominate or picking up a leaflet at a local TSB.
