Seal plans to be more of a mentor than a judge on Pitch Battle
He will sit in the guest judge seat this week.
Seal has described singing as “the purest form of communication” as he prepares to be a guest judge on competition show Pitch Battle.
He will join regular judges Gareth Malone and Kelis on the show on Saturday as choirs fight it out to be crowned the UK’s best vocal group.
Each week a different guest judge – from a list including Chaka Khan, Joe Jonas and Will Young – will join the choirmaster and the Milkshake singer.
“I think that there is so much information in the voice and there’s so much value in the voice, there are so many good properties in the voice and that’s the thing I’m most excited about hearing.
“I think it’s our purest form of communication, isn’t it?
“When you listen to someone’s voice it’s unique, every voice is unique and it’s at the very core, because it’s sound it’s at the core of our existence and that’s why it resonates the way it does.”
He added he does not feel comfortable about being called a judge on the show, but instead prefers to be seen a mentor.
He said: “I don’t like to think I am in a position to judge anyone or anything.”
He added: “I don’t know if I’m harsh, I’d like to think I am honest because I don’t really believe in placating anyone or leading someone under false pretences.
“You know you have to be careful sometimes with how you speak to people because the voice is so emotional.
“When you’re giving your opinion, you have to find ways of being truthful but always being constructive and at the same time just remember that you’re not dealing with just a standard instrument, you’re dealing with emotions and you’re dealing with a person’s life.”
The Kiss From A Rose singer said he would give contestants the same advice he gives his children.
He said: “I think half the battle is actually finding what you want to do.
“It sounds so simple but you’d be surprised how many people don’t know what they want to do and actually go through life without ever discovering their passion.
“When I’m talking with my kids, I always tell them, ‘I don’t mind what you do but just make sure you love it, make sure you really love it’, because I can think of few things worse than going through life and doing something you don’t actually love.”
