Cowan’s agent had told the Mirror Online his client’s split from the hit BBC comedy and popular stage show had been “amicable”.

He said: “Touring is a young man’s game and he just wanted to take some time off to reassess what he would do with the rest of his life.”

“It was an amicable split and he has worked with Brendan for years so there was no hard feelings.”

Cowan had starred as Rory Brown since 2001 and has been working with O’Carroll since the early nineties.
