She posted the snap on Twitter, writing alongside it: “Sent my Mum my official Strictly photo. She said I looked beautiful. I had a bit of a cry. A happy cry.”

The 4ft 10in Scottish comedian was the ninth celebrity to be confirmed for the BBC One series.

Following the announcement on Jeremy Vine’s BBC Radio 2 show, Calman said it would be the first time in 25 years that she would be wearing a dress.

She told Vine she had not worn a dress or heels – Strictly costume staples – since she was 17.

She added: “My mother will die happy to see me in a dress. To finally see me in glitter and a dress.”

Calman said she was going to ask her friend and former Strictly contestant Carol Kirkwood for some advice.

She also joked she would “hang around Judy Murray’s house and see if she can tell me anything”.
