But while The Killers, Stone Roses, Blondie, U2, Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon were performing in Shrewsbury these were not the real thing but were instead some of the best tribute bands in the country.

The Fake Festival was held in the Quarry on Saturday and more than 1,300 people of all ages headed for a giant marquee which had been set up close to the river.

Lee Storey, event manager said that now that the festival was in its third year in Shrewsbury the decision had been made to drop the local bands who used to perform and instead concentrate on the tribute bands renowned for their spot-on interpretations.

He said: “We go around the country with the Fake Festival and they are always well received. Coming to Shrewsbury is great.

"We worked closely with the Town Council to stage this event and it has all gone really well. Shrewsbury has fantastic people and they all embrace exactly what the Fake Festival is about. We enjoy coming back each year.”

Enjoying the Stone Roses was Jo Smith, 39 from Oswestry.

The nursery nurse said: “I am a huge Stone Roses fan. I love all their songs, but I have never seen them live. This is the next best thing.

"The version of Waterfall was brilliant and I really enjoyed Ten Storey Love Song.

"I have come along with my friend. Our partners were going out so we thought we would do something a bit different, and its great.”
