Shrewsbury dancers stepping up to break world record - with pictures
You could be forgiven for confusing Sundorne Games Hall for a 1920s dance hall as scores of world record hopefuls turned out to learn the Charleston.
They were getting to grips with the famous dance ahead of this Saturday’s I Can Charleston event at The Quarry in Shrewsbury.
The workshop was one of several held over the last few weeks in Shrewsbury to get people familiar with the iconic dance. Around 1,000 people – hopefully more – are expected to turn out in their dancing shoes to perform the routine simultaneously, stepping into the Guinness World Record books in the process.
Organiser Sarah Bright of Revel in Dance is hopeful of smashing the previous record of 975, set in 2015 by dance troupe Swing Patrol in London.
Sarah said: “The workshops have had well over 120 people each attending and have had such a good atmosphere. I am absolutely thrilled by how many people from across Shropshire are getting on board.”
There is one more workshop, at the Quarry at 10.15am on Saturday, for those wanting to get involved last minute.
The attempt is open to men, women and children over the age of 10. Organisers hope to have at least 1,000 people registered to ensure enough turn out on the day, and have already beaten the record ‘on paper’ with 985 signed up.
