The Christmas lights have been officially turned on in Shrewsbury, signalling both the start of the festive season and late-night shopping.
The county town cancelled its big switch-on event last year, following the tragic deaths of teenagers Jevon Hirst, Wilf Fitchett, Harvey Owen and Hugo Morris.
But the event was back on Wednesday, attracting thousands to what is is also the official start to the town's late-night shopping.
The Square was closed to all traffic from 8am ahead of the big switch-on, which was organised by Shrewsbury Town Council.
The fun started at 4.30pm in the Square with family entertainment ahead of the all-important countdown to the switch-on. Legendary panto dame Brad Fitt delighted the watching families with an elaborately-costumed performance.
Porthywaen Silver Band and Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir wrapped up the entertainment with a range of Christmas songs and carols before the big countdown.
Councillor David Vasmer, the Mayor of Shrewsbury, did the honours this year, turning on the lights at 6.30pm.
The day marked the start of late-night shopping at Shrewsbury’s Darwin Shopping Centre, which is open until 8.30pm with the Market Hall opening until 8pm.
