Lovely weather for ducks at annual race

The lovely weather for ducks helped an annual race go swimmingly.

Rain failed to put a dampener on spirits at the 10th annual duck races held in Carding Mill Valley.

In fact, the rain helped lift water levels, which helped the ducks on their way during the races, held in the beauty spot by Church Stretton.

The event, organised by Stretton Care, with permission of the National Trust which looks after Carding Mill Valley attracted dozens of people.

Jon Cooke, one of the organisers, said that the majority of the 10 races held on Saturday had been a sell out.

Each race has about 80 ducks and started at 12pm, with the last taking place at 4pm.

He said: "People come from all over the place to take part and they come back year after year.

"It has been a very good turn-out, most of the races have been a sell out.

"The recent rain we have been having has brought the water levels up in the valley so we've had a good flow of water.

"It helps us to get lots of people together so we can talk to them about caring for the environment, and it is always held with the kind permission of the National Trust, and it puts lots of people into their cafe every year.

"The weather was a bit iffy, but the sun started to come out ahead of the last three races."
