Regulars headed down to the Bulls Head Inn at Chelmarsh, which featured the Royal Ascot races on a big screen all afternoon, and a bookie in another room for residents to place bets.

Owner of The Bulls Head, John King, said that he understood how expensive Ladies Day at Royal Ascot could be so he decided to throw a version in the pub for the locals.

And they organised it to run aside the official Ladies Day on Thursday.

Mr King said: "The TV coverage started about 1.30pm and went on until about 5.30pm.

"We also provided a buffet, strawberries and cream, and the ladies received a glass of bubbly or pimms when they arrived.

"We also had a bookie in one of our back rooms taking bets all day.

"It's a nice, affordable way for the residents to celebrate. There were a few of the guys too.

"It's the first time we have held the event. We were just discussing Ladies Day with the locals in the bar one night and the ladies said how expensive it was to go to Ascot and how expensive the food and drink is there, so we decided to have something here instead.

"The locals have been really looking forward to it, we've got a great regular following who have all become friends over the last 10 years or so while we have been the owners."
