Banners ripped down ahead of Wellington festival
Organisers of an upcoming festival have been left devastated after £1,500 banners advertising the event were cut down.
A total of 10 banners advertising the upcoming People Of Wellington celebration were put up in various locations around the town.
But now around seven or eight of the banners have been cut down, at huge cost to the organisers of the multi-cultural festival, who say they wanted to hold the event to bring the community together.
The event is being organised by Eddie Lowe, of The Plough, with the help of resident s and other businesses and community leaders from the town.
He said: "We don't know where the banners are now.
"We want to organise this for the people of Wellington and bring the people together, then something like this happens.
"There are all sorts of groups of people in Wellington, from all over the world.
"We're trying to do something that will bring together all of Wellington, then we come up against something like this.
Eddie said he is trying to get hold of CCTV footage in a bid to find those responsible for the vandalism.
He said: "We would like to make an appeal to find out where our banners are and have them returned."
Food, arts and music will be the order of the day when the celebration is held next month.
Stall holders and live acts are wanted for the event which will feature a mini food festival and an artisan market for entrepreneurs to promote their goods.
The event for all ages will take place on June 24, in Market Square.
The artisan market will run from 10am to 10pm, 10am and world stalls from 10am to 4pm, and a mini food festival with an international flavour running from 4pm to 10pm. attractions include games, hog roast, Asian and Caribbean food, an assault course and performers.
There will be stages, in Tan Bank, and in the grounds of All Saints Church, in Church Street, which will be closed to traffic. Firefighters and the police will operate stands at the show.
Wellington Town Council has awarded the event a £500 grant to help offset the costs.
