Wellington Walking Festival is under way

Canal towpaths, woodlands, a steam railway and a movie night are among the fun activities at this year's Wellington Walking Festival.

Residents and visitors are being urged to pull on their sturdy boots for the event that's running until Sunday(17).

Highlights have so far included themed walks covering historic sites in Madeley and Dothill, The Shropshire Tub Boat Canal, Wrekin` Forest, and bus walks and talks. And the organisers Wellington Walkers Are Welcome group are hoping that as many people as possible will join in the series of events being held all this week.

Eve Clevenger the chairman of Wellington Walking Festival says: "We are looking for lots of people to take part in this week's activities. Everyone is welcome to come on these walks. There are 27 different walks and they range from easy to medium and long walks.

"This is the sixth year that we've run the festival."

Among the events tomorrow(wed) are a walk featuring the history of Dothill Nature Reserve. Participants should meet opposite the primary school, in Severn Drive, at 10am. A nine-mile circular walk to The Wrekin will start from Wellington Leisure Centre, in Tan Bank, from 10.10m; a 30 minute easy walk from the leisure centre will set off at about 1.45pm with a stop at Bowring Park; a 90-minute walk featuring steps and uneven ground will set off at the same time from the centre.

On Thursday there are two themed walks featuring the Wellington Mural Trail from All Saints' Church, in Church Street, at 10am; A guided walk of Lord Berwick's deer park at Attingham, Shrewsbury, at 2pm from the visitor reception. This event will be free for National Trust members with a card and £3 for non members.

On Friday there will be five themed events including walks at Ercall quarries; Apley Woods; The Wrekin and Wenlock Wood; and Windy Ridge. This will be followed by a quiz night at the Red Lion, in Holyhead Road, Ketley, at 7pm.

On Saturday all roads lead to Telford Steam Railway at 10am from the leisure centre; a bus walk from Wellington Bus Station at 1.45pm to, Trench returning on foot. While the Robert Redford and Emma Thompson film A Walk in the Woods will be showing at Belmont Hall, Tan Bank at 7pm. Events on Sunday include a bird walk at Dothill from 10am from outside the primary school, in Severn Drive.
