Telford stamp club set for talk on penny post

Telford's Stamp Club is today hosting a talk on the man who led a campaign to introduce the world's first 'penny post'.

Richard Camp, chairman of Telford Stamp and Card Club said: "The Stamp Club in Telford is hosting a presentation on the Life of Rowland Hill – the man who fronted a long campaign in the 1830s for cheap postage and introduced postage stamps in 1840 – the world’s first 'penny post'.

"He was also a typical Victorian philanthropist who wished to improve the lot of poorer people. He represents an important part if our history and the development of our country. It promises to be an interesting and informative evening.

The meeting will be held in the Belmont Community Hall at 7.30pm, finishing by 9.30pm.

Visitors are welcome and tea and coffee will be available during a half time break.
