Saturday marked the start of the popular pumpkin festival and despite the rain, plenty of families turned out to enjoy the fun.

Visitors to the farm shop, near Bridgnorth, were greeted by the Pumpkin Princess, heard stories about Spookley to Square Pumpkin, and took a ride around the countryside on the Pumpkin Express trailer.

There was then an opportunity to pick a pumpkin and carve it in the carving cavern.

Owner Lord Hamilton said: "Every year we do a pumpkin festival which starts the weekend before half term and runs through to Halloween.

"The first day was quite busy even though it was quite wet. It went really really well. It was nice to see everyone really excited and dressed up in their Halloween outfits."

For the six annual festival, more than 4,000 pumpkins were brought in from a farm near Shrewsbury.

Lord Hamilton added: "It's one of the biggest events of the year for us. Advance tickets sold really well and I'm expecting it to keep getting busier.

"We're aiming to get all 4,000 pumpkins carved and picked. We're all about local food and produce so the pumpkin festival really fits in with that."

Over half term the Apley maize maze will be transformed into a spooky quest for families to enjoy.

There is also a range of other family-friendly activities taking place up until Halloween.
