Chinese cuisine, professional lion dancers, rides and various attractions will feature when the celebrations are held on St Mary’s Street on Sunday.

Thousands of people are expected to turn out for the event, which saw as many as 5,000 people attend in previous years.

Lucy Luk, who organises the event, said: “We’ve got rides, performances from many traditional groups as well as local organisations and of course lots of Asian food – it’s a fun day out for all the family.

“It’s very much a community event and that’s why it’s so special. There’s lots of local clubs and it’s free. We get great support from the locals and everyone is right behind the event.

“It’s been a bit more of a challenge to organise this year as I am expecting a new child soon but I’m really looking forward to seeing it all in action.”

What started off as an idea to help Lucy's children celebrate the Chinese New Year has now transformed into an event attracting thousands of people.

“My children are half Chinese and so I wanted to do something to help keep their culture with them,” she said.

The celebrations are from noon until 6pm.
