The first of three ‘Pillows and Pilots’ sleepover dates takes place this weekend with 200 children and group leaders enjoying exclusive afterhours access.

Two additional sleepovers are planned for April 13, for girl groups, and May 11, for mixed groups.

Suitable for youth groups aged 7-15, not only will groups have the chance to explore the National Cold War Exhibition, they will also have an evening full of activities – and of course no sleepover would be complete without a late-night movie.

Exclusively for the ‘Pillows and Pilots’ sleepovers, youngsters will be able to take part in a range of activities including the robot war challenge using tablets to navigate their ‘bot’ around the course in the fastest time.

They can compete against their peers launching K’Nex rocket cars across the hangar floor with prizes up for grabs, and head over to the Vulcan and drop parachutes off the balcony, aiming for the target below.

A spokesman said: "For those who want to get creative, why not have a go at designing your own sleeping mask to use on the night and decorate a canvas bag to keep all your sleepover goodies safe. Capture the fun in a team photo by dressing up, selecting your props and posing for a picture, the perfect memento of the evening.

"Following the evening’s activities, attendees will take-off to the auditorium where organisers have lined up the perfect themed film to enjoy with popcorn before settling down for the night nestled amongst the aircraft. Everyone will be provided with a ‘Pillows and Pilots’ colouring and activity pack, so there won’t be time to get restless during the night if you’re wide awake and everyone else is sleeping!"

A continental breakfast will be served the following morning and youngsters will have early bird access to the museum shop and test flight hangar including the fun ‘n’ flight interactive area, with a 50 per cent discount voucher for a ride on the 4D Experience.

In the morning there will also be access on board the McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG1 front cockpit.

The sleepovers are suitable for organised groups of children (brownies, guides, cubs, scouts and cadets) aged seven to years old.

They cost £35 per child and £5 per adult, with a ratio of one adult for eight children.

Minimum of 16 children and two adults per booking – additional adults cost £35.

There are limited spaces available for each sleepover, and people can visit www.rafmuseum.org/cosford for more details and to make a booking.
