Excitement brewing for Newport's summer carnival
Preparations are well underway for this summer's Newport Carnival, and the town's children are invited to audition to become the traditional royal wedding party.
The carnival will go ahead on June 8 on the town's High Street, with hours of free music and performances for all ages, with a theme of 'past, present and future'.
Carnival committee chair Graham Foster said: "“We are all very excited about this year’s carnival. We are investing more than ever into the carnival in order to meet expectations of those that enjoy frequenting the carnival and of course covering the inflated costs of performance artists et cetera.
"Last year was a fantastic effort with near perfect weather conditions, I am hoping for the same again this time around."
The committee is looking for children aged between four and 11 to play the role of the royal wedding party, and auditions will be held at the Royal British Legion club in Audley Road.
Organisers said the move in recent years from the Shuker Field to the High Street has been a boost to the town's businesses.
Committee member Sarah Syrda said: “Since the carnival has moved into the High Street, we have seen this to be of a great benefit to our local economy. This year we are including a wider spread of acts, musicians and demonstrations across the High Street so no matter where you are, there’s something going on for you to enjoy."
The carnival relies on donations from parish organisations and the public, and collection buckets can be found throughout Newport. A JustGiving page can be found by searching for 'Newport Shropshire Carnival'.
Newport Town Councillor Thomas Janke, who helps to raise fund as part of the carnival committee, said the event was "the crown jewel" of Newport's community events.
