Rooftop beer garden plan for Newport tavern
A Newport pub could have its roof turned into a beer garden terrace, complete with artificial grass and picnic tables.
Black Country Ales bought the Railway Tavern in Newport's Upper Bar last year, and has now applied for permission to convert a flat roof at the back of the building into a terrace for outdoor drinking.
A statement submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council for the company said that a substantial refurbishment was planned.
"The property has limited outside space but does have an extensive flat roof area over the rear lounge," it says.
"We propose to cover part of the flat roof with decking boarding to allow water to discharge through the existing rainwater outlets and then cover the whole of the decked area with artificial grass.
"The new roof terrace would be accessed via a new staircase in the rear yard. We propose to surround the terrace area with 2m high close-boarded fencing, which will reduce noise and overlooking issues."
New security cameras would be installed to monitor the terrace.
The borough council is still consulting on the planning application.
