Chicken and mushroom pie may have been voted top of the charts but fans are still hot-footing it to Eley’s of Ironbridge for its famous pork pies and pasties.

Charlie Eley, of Eley's Pork Pies, in Ironbridge still popular with steady trading during lockdown

The bakery which has been open during the current lockdown has seen steady trading by taking online orders, delivering and making space for social distance queues after changing the way it operates during the lockdown.

Among the changes is that owner Tim Eley has handed over the day-to-day running of the business, in Tontine Hill, to son Tom, 23, while another son Charlie, 19, is part of the team baking the hand-raised pork pies.

Tom says: “We are still making our traditional pork pies and they are as popular as ever featuring pork and pepper seasoning and pork and chillies.

"We’re currently running a promotion doing personalised pork pies.

“Dad is semi-retired and I’m managing here and bringing expertise through development of our online activity.”

Research during British Pie Week found that chicken and mushroom came top in the savoury category while apple pie came top in the dessert category.

Wil Chung of food delivery app Foodhub says: “You can’t beat a classic pie, whether that’s sweet or savoury, it’s a timeless dish that offers something for everyone.

“Our research has surprisingly shown that chicken and mushroom is the nation’s favourite, beating the more obvious choice of steak and ale or a steak and kidney pie.

"One surprise is that meat and potato didn’t even make it into the top five.”
