Trio of top operas coming to Birmingham
Opera fans will be treated to a trio of shows at a Birmingham theatre next March.
The Welsh National Opera is bringing three performances to the Birmingham Hippodrome: Tosca, La Forza del Destino and Don Giovanni.
Tosca tells the tale of Floria Tosca, a woman with many admirers, but eyes for just one man - the painter Cavaradossi. But the malevolent Chief of Police, Scarpia, has other ideas and wants her for himself. As he schemes to trick the lovers and get what he wants, dramatic and tragic events unfold, leaving Tosca stood alone clutching a dagger in her bloodstained hands, and with a shocking final twist to follow. It will be sang in Italian, with English and Welsh subtitles.
La Forza del Destino is about a couple called Don Alvaro and Leonora who plan to elope. But when Leonora's father is killed by a stray bullet from Alvaro’s gun, it triggers an inescapable chain of events. Forced to flee as they are pursued by her brother, who has sworn vengeance, the characters are thrown together and torn apart in a series of coincidental meetings. The other-worldly presence throughout, of the carefree Preziosilla, provides a constant reminder that the force of destiny really is unstoppable. This will be sang in Italian, with English and Welsh subtitles.
Thirdly, Don Giovanni is centred around the arrogant and charismatic Don Giovanni, who seduces his way around Europe, taking what he wants and living for lust, without conscience. When one of his conquests ends in murder, it looks like his luck is about to turn. He finds himself on the run, pursued by disgruntled ex-lovers, fiancées and a force from beyond the grave. But when he refuses to show remorse, vengeance is inevitable and leads to his ultimate demise. This too will be sang in Italian, with English and Welsh subtitles.
La Forza del Destino takes place on Tuesday, March 6. Don Giovanni is on Wednesday, March 7, and Tosca will take place on Thursday, March 8.
Tickets for each opera start at £18.
