Madagascar the Musical, New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham - review with pictures

It was 7.30pm on a Tuesday - mid school holidays - and there were plenty of excitable children in Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre. Some giggling, some shouting, some just staring at the stage transfixed - but who could blame them? I was exactly the same.

I’m not ashamed to admit I didn’t even bring a child along, instead taking my 30-year-old other half to see this show. And we were smiling and dancing as much as the tiny five-year-olds sitting in the row just in front of us.

Created by Dreamworks - the company behind hit show Shrek the Musical - Madagascar the Musical sees proud lion Alex, played by X-Factor 2016 winner Matt Terry, comedic zebra Marty, nervous giraffe Melman, and sassy hippo Gloria bound out of Central Park Zoo in New York and off to the remote island of Madagascar.

The wild foursome meet a whole host of new friends, and find themselves suddenly in the mad and crazy world of lovable lemur King Julien.

For me, the highlight of the performance was the hilarious King Julien - I defy anyone to not fall in love with his accent and silliness.

Jo Parsons, who was also resident director, did an incredible job dressed up as the flouncy, elaborate royal lemur, shuffling around on the stage constantly on his knees.

Marty, Melman and Melvin were all equally fabulous, and X-Factor star Matt Terry completely blew the audience away with his fantastic singing voice, and booming roar.

Madagascar the Musical would bring a smile to anyone’s face. With our lovely summer heatwave fast disappearing, this performance is the perfect antidote to anyone needing a fantastic summer pick-me-up.

It’s pure joy, happiness and blissful fun. I’d encourage anyone to go and see it.
