The murder, mystery and intrigue of Agatha Christie's classic whodunit Murder on the Nile has been brought to life in a stylish new production at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn.

The packed audience who took their seats for the show's opening last night, were treated to great performances from a stellar cast including Dynasty legend Kate O'Mara, Soldier Soldier's Ben Nealon and Footballers' Wives star Susie Amy.

There was plenty of tension as the grizzly murders began to unfold – with several screams from audience members as loud gunshot noises were fired.

But as well as mystery this production had plenty of humour.

Kate O'Mara stole the show with her portrayal of snobbish character Miss ffoliot-ffoulkes. The 72-years-old actress delivered scathing put downs and one liners with expert timing.

The whole show, which was produced by the Agatha Christie Theatre Company, had an authentic 1930s feel. Its staging was simple and the action – which included an onstage murder – was well choreographed.

The only thing missing for me was a classic denouement in which all the characters are gathered to discover the murderer.

Nonetheless, this slick production certainly provides a great evening of entertainment.

Murder on the Nile runs until Saturday.
