More than a third of tickets for this year's Christmas pantomime in Shrewsbury have been sold already, it was revealed today.

Bosses at Theatre Severn say more than 13,000 tickets have been snapped up for Jack and the Beanstalk. The show will open on December 6 and run until January 13.

There are 39,000 tickets available for the show, and bosses say the good sales so far indicate that the pantomime is set for another record-breaking year.

More than 33,000 tickets were sold for last year's production of Aladdin.

Craig Reeves, marketing officer at Theatre Severn, said: "We are well ahead compared to this time last year and more than a third have been sold already.

"Very few tickets remain for schools' performances prior to Christmas.

"We advise customers to book early for their preferred performances and seats."

He said the popularity of the pantomime seemed to be growing each year and added: "Despite the gloomy economic situation over the last few years the pantomime has been a real success story.

"Pantomime can be enjoyed by all ages, often by three or four generations of the same family."

This year's show has been written and produced by Shropshire TV personality Paul Hendy. It will also feature a performance by veteran BBC Radio Shropshire presenter Eric Smith, who will be making his 10th appearance in Shrewsbury's annual pantomime. Mr Smith will play King Eric.

Meanwhile, 24 youngsters from dance schools across the county were recently selected to join the show's chorus.

Tickets for this year's show cost from £12 to £16. Concessions will receive £2 off.
