The Shropshire-based star, who played Boycie in the hit programme, told an audience that a 30th anniversary reunion had been planned for screening in 2011 as a BBC special. However, the death of Only Fools And Horses writer John Sullivan meant the plans were shelved.

Mr Challis made the revelation last night during Only Fools And Boycie, a 100-minute show in which he lifted the lid on his remarkable career and launched his new autobiography, Boycie and Beyond.

He also met scores of fans afterwards, including Keith Booles, of St Anne's Road, Shrewsbury, who won a Shropshire Star competition to meet Mr Challis and receive an autographed copy of the new book.

Mr Booles said: "I saw Only Fools And Boycie when it played Theatre Severn, in Shrewsbury, and loved it then. But I thought the Telford show was even better."

Mr Challis said he had enjoyed playing Oakengates Theatre and said: "The audience were wonderfully warm and I had a great evening. It was thoroughly enjoyable and I'm looking forward to visiting Telford soon for a book signing at Waterstone's."

Mr Challis will sign copies of his book at Castle Bookshop, Ludlow, on October 13 from 11am to 1pm and at Waterstone's in both Shrewsbury and Telford on October 20.
