Review: Jack and the Beanstalk at Theatre Severn
[gallery] It had all the ingredients for a classic panto with singing, dancing, slapstick and audience participation – and Jack and the Beanstalk at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn did not disappoint.
There were boos for the baddies, cheers for the goodies – and even a performance of worldwide dance craze Gangnam Style.
Hundreds of schoolchildren filled the auditorium for the show's debut yesterday morning – and had a fabulous festive treat.
This year's show follows the adventures of hero Jack Trott and his quest to conquer an evil giant and his bungling sidekick Fleshcreep, while winning the heart of beautiful princess Tamara. A wonderful cast of characters, including Dame Trott, Fairy Sugarsnap and Buttercup the Cow got the audience into the panto spirit.
Also treading the boards for the 10th year in a row was BBC Radio Shropshire stalwart Eric Smith, who plays King Eric.
Theatre Severn manager Peter Nicholson praised the presenter's dedication.
He said: "He's been everything from an Emperor to a Hard'up Baron, Eric the Elf to a Wizard of Ox and every year he makes it through while simultaneously delivering his breakfast show for Radio Shropshire."
Jack and the Beanstalk has been written by Shropshire TV personality Paul Hendy and the Dawley-born star's new show is packed with witty one-liners and county in-jokes.
There were also some great musical numbers, pyrotechnics, and even a scary mechanical giant.
Alongside the professional cast, more than 20 talented young dancers from Shropshire were in the chorus of this year's show.
It is directed by Brad Fitt – who also plays the hilarious Dame Trott, complete with her amazing and ever-changing array of costumes.
Last year's pantomime, Aladdin, was a runaway success, breaking Theatre Severn's box office records with ticket sales of more than 30,000.
This year's production is already on course to be another smash – one which is guaranteed to leave audiences with a big grin on their faces.
Jack and the Beanstalk runs until January 13. Call Theatre Severn for details on (01743) 281281.
