Devon weekend that brings home the bacon

Kirsten Rawlins experiences zorbing and cuddling in a beauty hotspot

Though we chose what had to be among the worst days for weather in August to visit Devon, close to the southern town of Totnes was bursting with life – packed to the rafters with things to do and boasting an array of wonderful eateries and sights.

When we were first approached about the trip, the extensive range of activities on offer made it very difficult indeed to decide what to cram into our two-day visit.

In the end, we settled on Pennywell Farm (famed for its gorgeous miniature pigs) and the thrilling River Dart Country Park.

First up was the wonderful Pennywell Farm – a large attraction with a whole host of animals, shows and workshops for all the family.

Unlike any other animal attraction I have ever visited, the first thing we spotted was a petting centre – offering visitors the chance to fuss rats, rabbits and guinea pigs; a wonderful opportunity for children to get up close to the critters.

There was also the chance to bottle feed baby sheep and goats and hold an array of birds of prey – as well as other activities.

But highlight of the visit to Pennywell – and more than likely of the whole break – was the beautiful miniature pigs, which are bred on site. Kept in a 'cuddle area', the tiny piglets were on offer to handle and pet. One even fell asleep on my partner's lap, which truly captured our hearts as the little creature snored and smiled as he slept. The worst part of our trip? Having to leave without one.

Next on our agenda was River Dart Country Park – a huge family attraction where visitors can test their nerves and try out new activities on the 'daredevil' course.

Among these activities was a high ropes course, water zorbing, canoeing and a tree-top zipwire.

And it was incredible. The water zorbing was hilarious – neither my partner or I seemed able to stay on our feet while the blow up plastic ball around us rolled around on the water. The canoeing, meanwhile, was relaxing and wonderful as we managed to get onto the glistening water just in time for the sun to come out.

The zipwire meanwhile was terrifying, as I'm more than a little wary of heights. But, once I had eventually taken the leap from the 15m-high tree platform, zooming over the water and down through the high ropes course, it was simply exhilarating. And one I would without doubt do again.

After a hard day's fun, we were delighted to find the hotel we'd been booked into was the stunning, historic landmark that is Dartington Hall. Originally a 14th century estate, the hotel boasts a cinema, a restaurant and a café – as well as acres and acres of stunning greenery.

There is also a beautiful banqueting hall on site with a picturesque garden – perfect for a wedding or summer soiree and the food from the onsite White Hart restaurant was delicious too; if a little overpriced.

The only disappointment of the trip – besides the torrential rain – was the Dartmouth River cruise, which was never to be. We arrived at Totnes port, boarded a boat and got ourselves comfortable for what was meant to be a round-robin trip – encompassing trips on a boat, a steam train and a bus, taking us from Totnes to Dartmouth, Kingswear, Paignton and back again.

Only it never happened. Due to strong winds the boat was unable to leave the quay. After two hours braving the elements, watching staff run around the boat and listening to tourists complain, we got off – more than a little fed up by this point.

Another must is a trip around the picturesque Totnes which lacks in attractions, but boasts a wonderful range of shops and restaurants on the waterfont.

It didn't go entirely to plan – but we were still sad to leave and would recommend the area to anyone of any age. It's a haven of beautiful views, attractions and stunning eateries – and a destination not to be missed.
