Five-star family fun beside the seaside

Having spent many a childhood summer holiday in Cornwall, it has always been a favourite destination for me.

So when the opportunity for a family trip to Trevornick Holiday Park, near Newquay, came up, I jumped at it. As our retriever Molly is very much part of the family, it was great that she was invited too.

Trevornick is a 5-star holiday park at Holywell Bay, four miles from the popular tourist hotspot of Newquay.

Originally a working farm and trekking stables, Trevornick has pitches for caravans, campers and ready-erected Eurotents, plus with new static caravans for hire and a couple of cottages to rent too, the site has something for every budget and is extremely dog-friendly.

There are plentiful and clean shower blocks and washing facilities, a well-stocked shop, a heated outdoor swimming pool, a packed entertainment programme with a family fun park a short walk away and lots of options for food.

We arrived on a Saturday lunchtime, and as it was the school summer holidays, the journey had taken us six hours.

We opted for Woody’s for lunch, overlooking the 18-hole golf course and with views out to sea. Woody’s is very laid-back and dogs are most welcome with water bowls and dog treats on the bar.

Hungry after our journey, we all opted for a burger and chips, but the menu featured a variety of dishes and there was a selection of specials available. Very tasty and reasonably priced.

After we’d eaten, reception called to say our tent was ready so we went to check out our home for the next week. The ready-erected Eurotent is the ideal option if you fancy camping, but don’t want to lug all the kit and kaboodle with you.

The living area features a table and chairs, fridge-freezer, microwave, gas hob and grill, toaster, all the crockery and cutlery you could need and, much to my boys’ delight, a television and plug sockets to charge their mobiles and tablets! However, there is so much to keep children busy, there really is no need for electronic entertainment.

The Eurotents are located in spacious bays of four tents, all with plenty of space for parking and an outside picnic bench. Our bay was among several that are dog-friendly.

The main facilities are all located around a central courtyard. A well-stocked shop features a range of food, drink, beach toys, clothes, souvenirs, camping essentials and there is even an on-site bakery serving the most delicious croissants. There is also a hire shop next door with a wide range of beach equipment.

Fodders restaurant served a wide menu for all ages and there was a takeaway offering a range of dishes including fish and chips, burgers and breakfasts.

While we were there, there were also food vans visiting serving freshly-made pizzas, Mexican and hotpots.

The nearby Farm Club has two floors with a bar on each and a variety of entertainment on the bill, including singers, comedians and even a balloon sculptor!

For daytime entertainment, the park has plenty of space for a kick-about, there is the 18-hole golf course and 18-hole pitch and putt and fishing lakes. For dog walks, the site has fields where dogs are allowed, as long as you scoop the poop!

The nearby Holywell Bay Fun Park is perfect for an afternoon’s entertainment. Ideal for younger children, the park features go-karts, crazy golf, a maze and water globes alongside lots of other attractions. Trevornick also features an arcade and a ‘chill out’ room with sofas for older children. There is also a indoor soft play area for youngsters. The entire site has Wi-Fi.

Particularly popular with my boys, was the swimming pool. And for mums in need of a pamper, there is the Tranquillity spa offering a range of treatments.

Holywell Bay is a small village with two pubs and a lovely beach which is maintained by the National Trust.

There is a large car park that is free to trust members. The beach itself is large and has a shallow river running through it, which is popular with young children.

Location for some of the filming of popular period drama Poldark, star Aidan Turner has even been spotted in the village.

Trevornick is open from Easter to October and welcomes over 10,000 guests from all over the country. Talking to other holidaymakers, it was clear that many of them had been to Trevornick before and intend to go again. You can’t get a bigger vote of confidence than that!

So if you want to see for yourself what this lovely park has to offer, you better get in quick!
