If you're looking for a London theatre break then Disney's The Lion King should be at the top of the list

The Lion King musical featuring amazing music, puppetry and costumes has been running for 25 years at London's Lyceum Theatre.

The story is set on the Serengeti plains of Africa and is centered on a young lion cub called Simba as he grows up to reclaim his rightful place as king after the untimely death of his father Mufasa and overcoming his villainous uncle Scar who wants to be the king.

It remains the bestselling musical in London. On a recent return trip as part of the celebrations it was easy to see why it it still holding its own among fans.

The show has been staged in many countries including the United States, Japan, South Africa and Germany and has now been seen by more than 114 million people across six continents in 25 productions worldwide. It has played on every continent except Antarctica.

In 1998 the show snapped up six Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical  and Julie Taymor show creator made Broadway history by becoming the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical.

It is perhaps best to travel by rail and to book an overnight stay to make the most of a London break.

Among the hotels to pick from is the wonderful art deco Grade II listed 1930s Melia White House which is located a stone’s throw from Regent’s Park, where we stayed on this trip, and found that it was a short walk from Euston Railway Station.

Our visit included pre-theatre food at bistro Pivot and pre-show drinks at pop art cocktail bar Mrs Riot, both situated close by in Henrietta Street in Covent Garden.
