Telford's Georgina heads for pageant finals
A beauty queen with a difference from Telford is heading for the national finals of the Miss British Isles competition.
Georgina Powell, the reigning Miss Telford Elegance who is also a singer, is hoping to bowl over the judges at the event in Chester on Saturday for a chance to win the £2,000 cash prize and opportunities for modelling work.
The 40-year-old made the finals after submitting photographs of herself online for the Miss Elegance round for participants, aged 28-44, and was subsequently selected for the main competition.
For the finals she will be required to take part in cocktail dress and evening wear rounds at a gala catwalk show, after which the winner will be announced.
The mother-of-one is being sponsored for the pageant by her bosses at Telford waste removal firm Reconomy, based in Stafford Park.
Georgina, of Doseley, says: "It's not a traditional beauty pageant. I'd love to get more exposure for my singing and it would be nice if I could win it.
"I used to do modelling in the past and I've always been interested in music. I started singing when I was five-years-old.
"I love things that celebrate diversity. I'm not not skinny, I've got curves. For someone of my age to be chosen for the finals, to me is quite special.
"I'm a bit nervous , but looking forward to Saturday. I've got my dresses and shoes ready and I'm good to go. My good friend Marie Campbell will be coming with me to cheer me on."
Final
She will be required to take part in a catwalk show at the final which is in front of the judges and the winner is announced on the day.
Georgina, also a keen gym-goer, attended the former Orleton Park School in Wellington, which has since closed.
"I was born and bred in Telford", the sales worker added.
Previous winners of Miss British Isles events have gone on to be signed by top modelling agencies, taken part in major TV shows and even have appeared in a Bollywood film.
