Darby's 1779, Ironbridge
Reviewer's rating **** Alex James makes himself comfortable at a table overlooking the Iron Bridge and tucks into a breakfast fit for an ironmaster.
Reviewer's rating **** The only thing bigger than the breakfast at Darby's 1779 is the welcome. That isn't the slogan - but it could be, writes Alex James.
The cafe, which opened in the summer of 2009, sits in idyllic Ironbridge with the perfect view of the bridge itself.
And if the setting isn't enough for you the food certainly will be.
When a colleague and I arrived at the tea room on a busy lunchtime we were warmly greeted by the friendly and enthusiastic staff who sat us down and handed over the menus.
The food choices range from breakfast sandwiches (from £2.95) to a selection of fry-ups (from £4.85) as well as panini, baguettes and wraps (from £4.35).
I opted, after much encouragement from the owner, to take on the Ironmaster Breakfast, a plentiful meal priced at £7.95.
While you might initially baulk at parting with nearly eight quid for a fry-up, when the plate arrives you soon see where the money has been spent.
All the fry-up favourites were there along with a supporting cast of hash browns and black pudding, and with the dish also including toast, a glass of fruit juice and a tea or coffee it could easily be enough for two people.
My colleague opted for a cheddar and pickle baguette (£4.95) which was served with the most delicious looking home-made coleslaw and a sprinkling of crunchy Kettle Chips.
She washed that down with a large cappuccino (£2.35) from an extensive drinks menu which also included a selection of soft drinks ranging from Curiosity Cola to Victorian Lemonade (£1.95).
It should come as no surprise that both plates were emptied swiftly, and despite admiring glances in the direction of the cream teas and cakes we declared ourselves full.
The tea room is the perfect choice for a light bite to eat, an afternoon tea or simply a coffee and a chat while watching the world go by.
And with the owners opening a bed & breakfast on site later this year it might be best to visit this little gem sooner rather than later - before the secret is out.
