We have visited The Lamb many times since we moved to Shropshire and not every time has been a success. It has now moved with the times complete with leather seating and wooden floors.

The car park at The Lamb has long been a tell-tale sign about its popularity because you would very often drive past and there would not be a single vehicle on the car park, but those days seem to have long gone.

There was another birthday in the Bailey household – mine. It was a last minute decision to pop along to The Lamb at teatime and there were a few diners there already.

We all decided to skip starters even though the menu looked delicious and there were a few different starters, such as homemade faggots with red wine and onion jus (£5.75) and roll mop (£3.95).

For the main courses there were some very good offers – two courses for £11.95, including lasagne, cottage pie and grilled trout with almonds served with chips and peas, two rump steaks for £15 and specials.

I was spoilt for choice with the menu, but finally decided on chargrilled sea bass served with sauted potatoes and a mixed pepper salsa (£9.95).

Neil chose from the specials board and went for beer battered fish with chips and mushy peas (£8.95) and my parents went for the two rump steaks. Our four-year-old son Daniel had no qualms about his order – he went for sausage and mash (£2.95) no questions asked.

While we were waiting for our meals, Grandad and Daniel went for a walkabout outside. There is a lovely beer garden with play area, but it was not really the weather for it. The service was impeccable – my dad had told a member of staff that the lights in the toilets were not working and within 10 minutes a waitress had come and told my dad that the lights were sorted.

All the main courses came with broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. My sea bass was chargrilled perfectly with the fish flaking away and the salsa complemented the meal – it wasn't too hot.

Neil said he was also enjoying his fish which was in a thick, crispy batter and very "fish and chip shoppy". His only complaint that it was a little on the small side.

My parents said their steaks were delicious and they were served with tomato and mushrooms. Daniel loved his two sausages and mash. He did say it was spicy and when I had a mouthful I have to agree – there were quite a few herbs in there. Daniel also delved into the carrots which are probably his favourite vegetable.

By dessert time, the pub restaurant was full with several large parties in for the night. Daniel was insistent he wanted chocolate fudge cake with custard and this is probably not the right word for a pub review, but he wolfed it down and there was not a crumb or a sliver of custard left on his plate.

Neil went for the same, but with icecream instead. He also had no complaints. I went for toffee lumpy bumpy pudding with ice cream, which was gorgeous.

My mum declined and dad went for cheesecake – his usual choice but he loved it. All the desserts were £3.95.

My birthday evening was a great success and I think The Lamb has now got it just right.

There is now an ideal pub to pop into that serves delicious and homemade meals and it doesn't break the bank.
