Merger plans for GP clinics
A GP surgery on the Shropshire/Powys border could close under a shake-up by health bosses.
The Llanfyllin Group Practice has announced it is exploring the merger of its Llansantffraid and Four Crosses surgeries.
The move is likely to take place over the course of the next 12 to 18 months and would involve the closure of the Llansantffraid premises, but the expansion of the existing Four Crosses surgery with additional facilities.
The move would, however, result in a seven-mile round trip for patients from Llansantffraid.
Peter Jones, senior partner, said: "The logistics and costs of operating from four sites is becoming increasingly difficult, not only in respect of GP presence, but also in terms of staffing.
"Another negative factor is funding anticipated to support the continued operation of branch surgeries has not been forthcoming.
"We currently have to close each of the surgeries for part of the week, but with the proposed changes we aim to be able to increase the total number of appointment slots available.
"We have a growing demand for patient services at Four Crosses and we also have the opportunity there to extend the premises.
"Sadly we do not have that option at Llansantffraid surgery where the site and the building present few alternatives.
"We will be working with a local architect and local planners to look at providing a 100 per cent increase in floor area at Four Crosses and to build upwards.
"We will also be consulting with patients to ensure that they are involved in the process as well as being kept apprised of developments.
"The end result could provide increased modern consulting rooms for both GPs and nursing staff. Community services such as chiropody and specialist clinics will also be available.
"While we understand our Llansantffraid patients may be inconvenienced by any changes we are confident they will in fact benefit from the proposed improvements to both working practices and environment." He said patients should be assured any inconvenience would be kept to a minimum.
