Not how centre turned out

This is Telford shopping centre, but not as we know it. This artist's impression was carried in the Shropshire Star of November 4, 1969, showing how the new town centre of Telford was proposed to look when it was completed on a 160-acre site at Malinslee.

"It is the largest centre proposed by any new town so far and the shopping area will be almost twice as big as Shrewsbury's present shopping centre.

"The top faces towards Wellington and the bottom towards Shifnal," the caption said.

It makes an interesting comparison with the way the shopping centre has actually turned out.
