Claims on Ronaldo unjustified
As a season ticket holder at Manchester United for many years I feel I am reasonably qualified to respond to the claims made by Simon Bunn - "Ronaldo out to hero's welcome" (Letters, August 29) in which he attacks a player of the club I have supported for many years.
In his letter he claims that Ronaldo cost England their chance of glory in this year's World Cup by winking at the Portuguese bench after appearing to have had a hand in clubmate Wayne Rooney's sending off.
Let's get one thing straight: Wayne Rooney got Wayne Rooney sent off, not the waving of an imaginary card by Ronaldo.
As for his view that the incident cost England a chance of World Cup glory, well I am afraid the people who cost England World Cup glory were an under-performing squad of players and a tactically bereft coach.
He also states that the tabloid press were praising Ronaldo after calling for him to be kicked out of the country after England's defeat.
Well Mr Bunn should rea-lise that the press, and especially the tabloid press, is only interested in selling newspapers and some of the things he reads should at first be read with disbelief and then with scepticism.
I would also question Mr Bunn's use of the word "hate" when he asserts that Manchester United fans' welcome for Ronaldo shows "why they are hated".
Mr Bunn should realise that hate is a very strong emotion, and in its most extreme form led to the death of millions of Jews at the hands of the Nazis.
Mr Bunn is entitled to his opinion, but I am also entitled to mine and I am also annoyed at his over-the-top reaction to what is, after all, only a game.
