Compost site could boost recycling
A new open-air compost site could be created in Whitchurch under plans to increase recycling.
The land at Twemlows Hall in Whitchurch would be used to compost green waste.
The site would not be open to the public, but if the scheme gets a contract with the district and county councils, waste collected from homes across Shropshire could be delivered to the land. The proposal looks set to be approved when it goes before county council planners tomorrow.
The site would employ four people and would operate between 8am and 6pm, seven days a week. A report to councillors states that when the site is fully operational, a maximum of 20,000 tonnes per year would be imported.
The site is off the A41 and it has been estimated there would be about 3,000 loads taken to and from the site each year. Concerns had been raised about pests and vermin, but the report states no food waste would be taken to the site.
Shropshire County Council minerals and waste planning officer, Stewart Rutter, said the applicant intended to attract commercial and municipal green wastes. Members of the public would continue to take their green waste to household recycling venues, or put it out for collection by the district council, and it could then be transferred to the new site.
