Protester released by police
A 77-year-old anti-nuclear campaigner who lives near Whitchurch has been released by Scottish police after being arrested for breach of the peace.
Grandmother Joan Meredith, of Malpas, blocked a traffic island at Her Majesty's Naval Base Faslane, in Clyde, on Sunday with other protesters to disrupt workers. She was arrested on Monday but revealed she had been released without charge.
Activists staged a non-violent blockade at the start of Faslane 365 which they say is a year of civil resistance to Britain's nuclear weapons programme.
Mrs Meredith travelled to the home of Scotland's Trident nuclear submarine fleet to meet other campaigners hoping to highlight the political and financial costs of the submarine project.
Mrs Meredith said: "We usually try to block the gate but the police had barriers and things up.
"However, I have been released without charge."
