Biofuels are not a solution

Biofuels are being put forward as the answer to our transport needs, the plight of local farmers and air quality problems. Biofuel crops in Shropshire may well be a short-term help to farmers, especially those used to growing sugar beet.

However, there are concerns about the widescale development of biofuels, especially if they're wasted on allowing increased travel.

Whilst using biofuels would reduce carbon dioxide emissions they would do nothing for our major air pollutants, nitrous oxides and particulates. We live in a world with a growing population and decreasing soil fertility. We will therefore soon need more land for food.
