Newport Town Council has scooped a Green Apple gold award from The Green Organisation for its environmentally-friendly composting system at Newport Cemetery.

Glyn Gratton, town mayor, was presented with the award by wildlife personality David Bellamy.

Town clerk Dee Halliday said it was an "amazing" accolade.

The town's Heart of England in Bloom Committee also won a silver award for its work on restoring the town canal.

"They award things worldwide, so for a little town council to get a gold award is amazing," Ms Halliday said.

She said the council had installed the worm farm about a year ago and was delighted with the results.

"There is a lot of green material generated at the cemetery and we were looking for a way of breaking that down," she said.
