Future of landmark is secure

The future of a Bridgnorth landmark is secure despite a development to transform it into luxury apartments being abandoned, council officials said today. Site huts were removed from Fort Pendlestone, alongside the A442 Telford road, in August.

Site huts were removed from Fort Pendlestone, alongside the A442 Telford road, in August, when developers Venture Coburg went into administration, leaving the scheme to convert the 19th century building in limbo.

But planning officer for Bridgnorth District Council, Richard Fortune says the building is actually in better condition than it has been for many years.

"As far as I am aware it is still in the hands of the receivers as the company has gone into administration," he said. "They are still seeking a party to carry on with the development.

"The last we heard from them was when they asked for an update on the various planning issues which had been met.

"The work done means that it is currently in a better condition than it has been for many years. It is not under threat as a listed building as the fabric has been put in good order.

"Obviously we would like to see it stepped up and moved on as soon as possible as a lot of work still needs to be done."

Fort Pendlestone, which is on the site of an ancient water mill, has been used as a dairy and for industrial units, but became derelict several years ago.
