The British Olympic gold medallist will announce details of Swimathon 2007 when he arrives at the town pool on November 30.

He will also meet and congratulate staff and fundraisers for their efforts at this year's event.

The swimmer, who was awarded the MBE for his services to sport and is Swimathon president, agreed to go to Market Drayton after it was revealed the town pool and the one in nearby Whitchurch were among the best fundraisers at Swimathon 2006.

People who took part at the two centres raised more than £4,500 for the National Children's Home charity, NCH. Next year's event will raise money for Macmillan and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

North Shropshire District Council said the authority was delighted Mr Goodhew would be arriving at their swimming centre in Market Drayton.

Councillor David Minnery, district leader, said: "I'm thrilled that the district's swimming centres have received this commendation.

"I hope to see more swimmers at the 2007 event which is a great opportunity for swimmers of all abilities to become healthier and more active whilst raising funds for such a worthy cause."
