A "large black cat" was spotted by a police officer in Telford - just days after two other sightings were reported.

The latest sighting of the animal was reported by an borough officer, who has not been named, near to The White Horse pub in Dawley at 3.15am on Friday. Details of the sighting have only just been revealed.

The officer said the "very large black cat" crossed the road and disappeared into the grounds at the back of the pub.

Pc Pete Simmonds, Telford police spokesman, said: "The animal was described as being of bonnet height and with a long tail.

"Other patrols responded to this report, but nothing tangible was found to corroborate the sighting."

The sighting was the third in six days. Two Telford Town Park rangers reported they had seen a "big, black puma" in the park on November 21, days after Diana Young, 65, saw "a big cat" while walking her dog in fields between Lawley and Dawley.

Pc Simmonds said: "Animals will avoid contact with humans and generally flee. Never approach one. Stay calm and back away slowly, don't run."

Anyone who spots such an animal can call the park ranger service on (01952) 290240.
