Popular local vet dies at 58

A well-known veterinary surgeon from the Powys/Shropshire border has died at the age of 58. Ian Cyril Shapter, known locally as "Ian the Vet", died at his home in Llandysilio, Four Crosses, on Sunday.

A well-known veterinary surgeon from the Powys/Shropshire border has died at the age of 58. Ian Cyril Shapter, known locally as "Ian the Vet", died at his home in Llandysilio, Four Crosses, on Sunday.

Mr Shapter, the son of Cyril and Joan Shapter, was born in Singapore in 1948.

Educated at Llanelli Grammar School, he gained a place at Liverpool Veterinary School in 1967 and joined Jenkin O Davies Veterinary Practice in Four Crosses, where he became a partner in 1978.

Mr Shapter met Philippa Gittins, a veterinary assistant in a neighbouring practice, in 1973 and they marr ied in 1976. They have a son Oliver, who is reading medicine at university, and daughter Sophie, who has qualified as a doctor.

In 1993 Mr Shapter retired from practice and joined the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in Shrewsbury.

"His passing has left a dreadful, unfillable space," said the family.

A service of thanksgiving will be held at St Tysilio's Church, Four Crosses, on Friday at 1.45pm.
