He met residents and councillors at Market Drayton swimming centre, and urged them to get in the water and get fundraising.

Swimathon 2007 was launched in north Shropshire after the swimming centres in Whitchurch and Market Drayton raised £4,500 last time round, the highest in the region.

This year people taking part will be raising funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Goodhew said: "With a 21-year history Swimathon is the longest standing event of its kind, it is lots of fun and the perfect opportunity to increase your fitness and become healthier and more active.

"We want everyone of all ages and abilities to sign up for one of the Swimathon challenges and join thousands of swimmers nationwide at their local pool to play their part in making it the biggest swimming fundraiser in history."

North Shropshire District Council leader, David Minnery said: "We are proud to play host to this event and we hope to see many more swimmers in next year's campaign."

Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high quality nursing, totally free, to give terminally ill people the choice of dying at home supported by their families.
