Stretches of the rivers Severn and Vyrnwy were on flood warnings today, with Environment Agency experts warning that homes and businesses near the rivers could be flooded.

Areas on alert included the River Severn from Crew Green to Shrawardine, including Llanymynech, Maesbrook, Melverley, Melverley Green and Pentre.

The Severn and its tributaries throughout the rest of Powys were on flood watch alerts, meaning flooding of low-lying land and roads was expected.

Also on flood warnings were the A487 at Dyfi Bridge, Pennal and parts of Machynlleth, and the River Vyrnwy from Newbridge, through Meifod and Llansantffraid to Crew Green.

The River Wye in Powys was put on flood watch alert.

Trains had to be cancelled earlier today between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth, and from Machynlleth to Towyn and between Machynlleth and Newtown.

A spokesman for Powys County Council said only one flood-related incident had been reported to the authority, a small landslide on a private road.
