The father-in-law of top Shropshire golfer Ian Woosnam has died at his Oswestry home. Police today launched an investigation following the unexplained death of Terrance Pugh, 66.

Mr Pugh was found at his home in Harlech Court shortly before 1.30pm yesterday.

Police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk said: "Police were called to an address in Oswestry following reports a man had been found dead.

"On arrival they found the body of a man and an investigation has been launched. His death is being treated as unexplained at this time.

"A report will be prepared for the coroner. A post mortem examination is due to take place today and an inquest is expected to be opened early next week.

"There has been no formal identification at this stage."

A spokesman for the coroner's office confirmed it had been notified of a body but said it had no further details at this time.

Spokeswoman for Shropshire Ambulance Service Daphne Lewis said: "We did attend an address in Harlech court but we were not required and were released."

Mr Pugh was the father of Glendryth Woosnam, the wife of Ian Woosnam, who led the European team to victory in the Ryder Cup in September. The couple are originally from St Martins, near Oswestry.

Mrs Woosnam's sister, Gretta Clarke, today said the family did not want to comment at this time.

Oswestry Golf Club secretary Peter Turner today offered his condolences to the family.
