A bogus police officer has stolen hundreds of pounds from the Telford home of an 88-year-old woman.

Police are now warning people in the area to be on their guard and to look out for elderly neighbours.

The man knocked on the front door of the woman's house and told her he was a police officer.

When she asked him for identification, he refused to show any. He then pushed past her and asked her where she kept her valuables.

She showed him and he took £300 before leaving the property in Snedshill Way, Snedshill.

The victim was unhurt but was left shaken by the incident at about 8pm on Monday. The man is described as white, aged 25 to 30, 6ft tall, with short dark hair and was dressed in black.

Detective Constable Jo Keenan warned people to be on their guard.

"Preying on and stealing from the elderly is a despicable crime and we are determined to apprehend those responsible," she said.

"Following last night's incident, we are urging residents across Telford and Wrekin to be vigilant and keep bogus callers out.

"A genuine police officer would always carry their warrant card and identification and would never refuse to show it."

Anyone with information is asked to call detective constable Keenan on 08457 444888. Information can also be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
